THE NEW PROFESSIONALS
How many freelancers are in your company today? And how many creatives secretly crave the flexibility that freelancing offers? As lifestyle choices drive more designers, writers and other creatives to take on their own after-hours clients, or jump into full-time freelance work, we're seeing an interesting phenomenon happening in the industry: Freelancing is becoming less 'free'.
For freelancers, simply being creative is no longer enough. They need to be business-like too. A freelancer is not just a designer, or a writer. He or she is a business person. Read on for more...

CHANGES TO FREE LISTINGS ON Freelancentral.co.za
"Why would I contact a freelancer if I can't see their work on your site?" This comment from an ad agency client has been echoed many times by many other clients over the last 18 months. Very rarely will a free-listing freelancer be contacted for work. So in the interests of providing a directory of serious, professional freelancers, we are going to be phasing out the free listings from 1 August 2007.
During August, search results will show all appropriate Full and Lite members, plus a random 10 free listings. From 1 September, only Lite and Full portfolios will be shown. If you're a freelancer who is serious about being found by clients, you'll need to upgrade your free listing at least to a Lite portfolio - which costs just R75/month.
All freelancers can still be registered on the Freelancentral database and receive our newsletters and emails - your information just won't be visible to the public unless you have upgraded. Contact us if you have any queries.
CHRISTINE ONLINE: Staying connected: Why you should consider e-newsletters
Last month Christine looked at managing your online reputation and how to use the growing world of social media to your advantage. This month she looks at the importance of email newsletters and how to go about writing a newsletter that will catch the imagination of your clientele, or prospective customers.
